The primary area of research is clinical transplantation. The clinical
material comes to our laboratory from all transplant programs, which
include kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, and stem cell. A major
emphasis is placed in the use of flow cytometry to detect and quantify
alloantibodies in transplant recipients before and after transplantation.
Although the studies are ongoing, multiple published contributions
have been made in kidney transplantation and, more recently, in
liver and lung transplantation. Technical developments are pursued
in molecular typing and detection of stem cell engraftment. Our
laboratory also participates in a multidisciplinary project to bank
umbilical cord blood for the purpose of stem cell transplantation.
