Hematopathology Fellowship

Description:

This is an ACGME-accredited fellowship program designed to train academically oriented physicians in the practice of modern hematopathology with an emphasis on neoplastic hematologic disorders. Upon completion of the program, the fellow should be able to interpret the results of a variety of diagnostic procedures including conventional morphology, immunohistology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular genetics. All diagnostic technologies available to the fellow reside in a single centralized location. Integration of these diagnostic modalities with an emphasis on clinical correlations is the primary aim of the program. Active pediatric and adult hematology/oncology and bone marrow transplantation services at Shands Hospital and other University of Florida affiliated institutions provide a large and varied selection of clinical materials. Also, our laboratory is a referral center for hematological neoplasias in the Southeast, serving the needs of numerous hospitals and clinics that provide additional materials in consultation.

The fellowship includes rotations through general hematology and coagulation laboratories. It would also be expected that the fellows engage in investigative activities, which are strongly encouraged and facilitated by a large tumor repository and well equipped clinical and research laboratories. Gainesville, the home of the largest campus of the University of Florida, is located in north central Florida within convenient access to the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa, Orlando and cities of the Atlantic coast of Florida. Its climate allows year-round enjoyment of the outdoors including nearby parks and lakes. The University, one of the most prestigious in the southeastern United States, enrolls approximately 48,000 students and provides a range of excellent scientific, artistic, cultural, and athletic programs.
