Conferences
In Clinical Pathology, a weekly Monday 7:30-8:30 AM CP conference is held. The CP conferences consist of both faculty didactic presentation and case-based presentations given by residents. The didactic sessions follow chapters and topics in McClatchy's Clinical Laboratory Medicine.
In Anatomic Pathology, required AP conferences are held as described below:
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM;
Title: AP Didactic Core Curriculum Conference
Topics: All areas of anatomic pathology.
Guideline: Chapters and topics in Rosai and Ackerman's Surgical Pathology are covered.
Format: These lectures incorporate formal PowerPoint or kodachrome presentations as well as scope sessions with slide review and gross conferences.
Schedule: The schedule will be announced monthly by the Chief Resident. The faculty schedule for the AP didactic lectures is published yearly. The intent is that the faculty will provide a curriculum that will be repeated every 2 years.
Wednesdays;7:30 AM - 8:30 AM;
1st Wednesday of the month
Title: Gross/Micro Conference
Topic: A 20 minute scholarly presentation is made by a resident with a 10 minute group discussion. The case and topic presented may be AP or CP with emphasis on interrelating disciplines. Presentations should include literature references and may combine pathobiology, physiology, molecular biology and other related fields. Two different residents will present during the hour conference.
Schedule: The chief resident will provide the residents with assigned dates at the beginning of the year.
2nd Wednesday of the month
Title: Monthly Anatomic Pathology QA meeting
Topic: Faculty and Residents are encouraged to bring interesting and challenging cases to be discussed at this forum. An individual may bring multiple cases to share if time permits. The Chief Resident moderates the forum.
3rd-5th Wednesdays of the month
Title: AP Unknowns Conference
Topic: The conference features unknowns selected by the resident assigned to guide that week's conference. The Residents select interesting and educational slide (4-5) cases. The cases may or may not be related and the slides will be provided for review by the residents at least one week in advance with a case history. Preferably 2 sets of slides are made so that one set is available at Shands and the other set is available at the VA. Following the presentation, case histories with the diagnoses and a printout of the presentation are to be given to Karen Hyde for the "AP Archival Slide File."
Schedule: Residents are assigned to specific dates by the chief resident at the beginning of the year.
Friday's 7:30-8:30
Typically, these are resident directed conferences, scope sessions and gross conferences.
Journal Club: Journal club is held monthly (4th or 5th Thursday evening of each month). The sponsoring attending will chose recent articles, or a "classic article." Review articles are usually not suitable topics for journal club. The appointed residents will critically review the articles and present them at the journal club. The attending will be at the journal club, but the resident is responsible for presenting the article(s) and fostering discussion. The purpose of journal club is three fold: 1) to learn how to critically assess the medical literature, 2) to review a specific recent topic and 3) to develop a pattern of life-long learning that includes a critical review of the current and pertinent medical literature.
Business/regulatory conferences for residents: Given throughout the year, these lectures address ACGME competency #6 (Systems-Based Practice). The topics are listed below:
1. Medicare Reimbursement: A Historical Perspective
2. CLIA: Understanding Compliance and Enforcement
3. CAP Inspections
4. The Compliance Trilogy: Part I Reporting and Billing Compliance
5. The Compliance Trilogy: Part II Research Compliance
