    Laboratory Research:

    Influenza Vaccine:

Dr. Bender, I and our colleagues have developed and patented an orally administered replication deficient vaccine vectored influenza vaccine and proven its immunogenicity and efficacy in mice.
Currently we are evaluating it in horses and pigs.

    Diagnosis of Sinusitis:
Dr. Shih-Wen Huang and I have shown that one can diagnose sinusitis using a simple technology to estimate concentrations of protein, leukocyte esterase and other components in nasal secretions.
    Education Research:

Parker A. Small, Jr. M.D. developed group instructional methodology, a system that presents a problem to a group of 4 or 5 students and provides each with a booklet containing the required information.  The students must work together and teach each other to solve the problem.  He has developed award winning modules using this methodology and provided them free of charge to medical, professional and K-12 students throughout the United States and beyond.

    1.  Medical Education

    • Immunology Patient Oriented Problem Solving (POPS):

    • 6 modules estimated use ~ 100,000 medical students (Probable reason Dr. Small was chosen National Basic Science Teacher of the Year in 1993).
    • Pharmacology POPS:

    • Dr. Small and Dr. Neims helped pharmacologists adopt system to their subject.
    • Project Haiti:

    • Dr. Small has been faculty advisor for the 5 years this student organized, student run program has been sending 20 students to spend their spring break in Haiti providing care.
    2. Professional Education
    • For the last 3 years, Dr. Small has co-led the PIPSA (Partners In Prevention of Substance Abuse) program wherein interdisciplinary groups of medical, dental, vet med, nursing and pharmacy students (~550/year) use POPS to learn about tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and then go out to teach ~ 15,000 middle school students.  This program will be introduced into Florida’s other 3 health science centers this spring.
    3. K-12 Education (distributed materials for >500,000 Florida Students and provided teacher training.
    • High School Sex Education (4 team packs), one of which was the key component of the Gainesville High School AIDS education program selected by National PTA in 1988 as best in nation.
    • Middle School (5 team packs).  Puberty, Immunization/Infectious Disease and Substance Abuse team packs.
