The Ostrov lab is comprised of several people. Below is contact information for each member of the lab as well as a short summary of the research performed
by each person, including links to the pertinent research pages in this site.
David Ostrov - PI
Email: ostroda@pathology.ufl.edu
Research: David Ostrov is interested in generating and utilizing structural information to provide the basis for the development of immunomodulatory therapeutics. He is strongly interested in rapidly developing techniques in high-throughput x-ray crystallography and structure-based drug design. In addition, he is interested in rock and mountain climbing, enjoys music, and Sally the dog.
Christine Barnes
Email: barnecl@pathology.ufl.edu
Research: Christine Barnes (The Crunkster), is currently pursuing a bachelors in Health Science (Rehabilitation Services) at the University of Florida with plans to further her education with a Masters in Physical Therapy and certification and licensure in Therapeutic Massage. In addition to her academics, she became the Ostrov lab’s first undergraduate student (2002) in effort to determine structures of all proteins in the MHC region in the research project of Structural Genomics and Proteomics of the Major Histocompatibility Complex. Christine’s current work includes cloning, sequencing, and expression of MHC targets. Her long-term goal is to develop cancer vaccines and other immunomodulatory therapeutics. She is also a member in the University of Florida’s Minority Association for Pre-Health Students and Undergraduate Women in Science club. She enjoys volunteering her time at Shands Hospital during the summertime and remains active in her youth church group throughout the year.
Jose Hernandez
Email: jahp@ufl.edu
Research: Fill in research information in this space. I will put something here when you can send me an email with a short paragraph
about your work.
Matt Parker
Email: parkermj@pathology.ufl.edu
Research: Matthew Parker is currently in his final year of completing a BS in Microbiology at the University of Florida. He is interested in pursuing a PhD in immunology following graduation. Matthew currently spends his time in two labs in the Department of Pathology, working part-time in the Atkinson lab and volunteering in the Ostrov lab. Here, he primarily maintains this website, but also is involved with other lab work.
Patrick Quint
Email: quint@pathology.ufl.edu
Research: Patrick Quint, aka The Trickster, graduated from Macalester College with a BA in Biology and a Philosophy minor. After working in industry for two years, he decided it was time to return to the books and work toward a PhD in biochemistry. Patrick joined the College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Program in 2001and became the Ostrov Lab’s first graduate student in 2002. His current work involves the structural elucidation of Allograft Inflammatory Factor-1 and several Systemic Lupus Erythematosis gene products. Outside the lab, Patrick is the current President of the Gator Bujutsu Club and Vice-President of the Kyudo Society of Florida. Club memberships include the North Florida Archery Association and the North Florida Botanical Society.
Luke Smith
Email: smithlu@pathology.ufl.edu
Research: Luke Smith-Luke, the senior laboratory technician and lab safety officer, graduated from the University of Florida. Luke is strongly interested in the evolution of the immune system and hopes to apply crystallography to address important disease relevant questions. Luke is also interested in music, and plays in the band “Fresh Progression.”
