Background Education:
Dr. Normann received his MD degree from the University of Washington,
Seattle in 1960. He interned in surgery at the University of California,
San Francisco, and from 1961 to 1966 was in a combined residency/PhD
program in Pathology at the University of Washington. From 1966
to 1968, he served in the United States Army Research and Development
Command and was awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement
for research from the Assistant Secretary of the Army in 1968. He
joined the faculty of the University of Florida in 1968 and trained
in cardiovascular pathology at Northwick Park Hospital, England
in 1975. He was a consultant and co-investigator with the Swiss
Institute for Medical Research, Davos, Switzerland from 1975 to
1986 and organized the IX International Congress on macrophage biology
in 1982. Dr. Normann served as President of the Society for Leukocyte
Biology (formerly the Reticuloendothelial Society) in 1979 and as
President of the American Cancer Society, Florida Division in 1999.
Dr. Normann played a key role in the legislation that created the
Florida Biomedical Research Program. He was appointed to the Florida
Biomedical Research Council in 2000.
Dr. Normann was appointed Chief of Cardiovascular Pathology in 1975 and has coordinated the medical student courses in pathology from 1990 to 2005. In 1995, he received the Teacher of the Year Award from the College of Medicine as well as the Basic Science Teacher of the Year Award. In 2004, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the College of Medicine. He is a member of the Society of Teaching Scholars of the College of Medicine, the College of Medicine Curriculum Committee, Academic Status Committee, and is Chair of the College of Medicine Compensation Committee.
