Mr. Foss is the Associate Director of Surgical Pathology Services. He
graduated from Duke University Pathologists' program in 1979 and worked in
a private pathology group for 8 years in upstate New York (Utica) before moving to
the University of Florida in 1987. He is a Fellow in the American Association
of Pathologists' and is certified by ASCP. He oversees the operation
in the grossing room and frozen section area. His primary
responsibilities are to insure that the specimens are processed following
the protocols established by the pathologists and that the residents
learn appropriate grossing and frozen section techniques.
The department is invested in digital technology through the upgrade of department equipment. This includes the addition of digital gross specimen cameras, digital photo microscopes, a 35 mm slide to digital scanner, a photo printer and an imaging laboratory. This has enhanced faculty and resident presentations and conferences. Mr. Foss coordinates this technology and serves as a resource person. He also archives the gross images to CD-rom and the department server. All the photos are entered into a database for retrieval by SNOMED codes. He received two first place awards and an honorable mention in ASCP gross specimen photography contests in 2000 and 2001. He also received the Resident Educator of the Year for 2005-06.
