Shands Medical Lab Ordering

Shands Healthcare Laboratories are committed to providing excellent laboratory services to you and your patients. Our goal is to offer quality service to our patients and clinicians, while better managing cost and logistics. In an effort to offer a comprehensive test menu, Shands Sendout Department has partnered with ARUP Laboratories as our primary reference laboratory.

Laboratory Ordering Process:
All orders for laboratory test are to be processed through Shands Laboratories. Upon receiving the order, Shands Laboratory Sendout Department will evaluate and determine if a test is not performed within the Shands Healthcare Laboratories. Those test not performed within the Shands system, will be forwarded to a Shands pre-approved reference laboratory. Utilization Tools:
Please be aware that many of these send out tests and test panels are very expensive and run into thousands of dollars per test. Furthermore, a few of the most expensive tests are of limited diagnostic value and are therefore of questionable benefit in managing the disease process. It is incumbent upon the medical practitioner to be aware of the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity when ordering these tests.
