Pulmonary Pathology
The pulmonary pathology unit provides comprehensive lung pathology services to patients at the Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, using state-of-the-art technology to assure the highest quality of service.
We routinely process biopsies and surgical specimens to diagnose transplant rejection, infectious lung disease, lung tumors, interstitial lung disease, and other chronic non-neoplastic lung disorders. Techniques include frozen section and fixed tissue light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. We closely collaborate with colleagues in adult and pediatric pulmonary and critical care services, the thoracic surgery and lung transplant units as well as hematology/oncology and diagnostic radiology, thereby providing highest-standard care in a timely and efficient manner. We likewise provide regional consultation services in pulmonary pathology through the Department's Diagnostic Referral Laboratory.
We actively participate in the pathology department’s residency training program through didactic lectures and practical hands-on training during a one-month, lung-pathology rotation.
The pulmonary pathology unit also fosters interdisciplinary research programs in lung cancer and transplant-related research.
