Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Pathology

Our mission is to provide rapid and high-quality pathologic diagnosis related to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas. Evaluation of biopsies obtained at endoscopy plays a critical role in the management of digestive disorders, including Barrett esophagus, gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and neoplasms of the gut. Management of most liver diseases is heavily influenced by evaluation of liver biopsies, including hepatitis, biliary tract disorders, and the post-transplant liver. Biopsy evaluation of biliary tract or pancreatic tissue, obtained during endoscopic retrograde pancreatocystography, percutaneous, or by other approaches, is particularly important when malignancy is of concern. Lastly, surgical removal of alimentary tract specimens gives opportunity for definitive pathologic evaluation of all disorders affecting these tissues.

We have four board-certified experts Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathologists, who collectively review over 5000 alimentary tract specimens and over 700 liver biopsies annually. Our service encompasses both adult and pediatric populations. Our group has active and National Institutes of Health-funded research programs on hepatitis C virus, liver cancer, alpha-one antitrypsin deficiency, gene therapy, hepatic and alimentary tract toxicology, dysplasia in Barrett esophagus, and colorectal cancer.

We commit to rapid evaluation of case material, and accept rush cases at any time. For consultative cases we commit to personal communication with the patient’s medical team whenever such contact can be made.
