Cytopathology

The division of Cytopathology at the University of Florida Diagnostic Reference Laboratories is divided into Gynecologic Cytology and Medical Cytology which includes Fine Needle Aspiration. The Gynecologic Cytology service includes Pap Tests via both conventional or liquid- based. Liquid base Pap Tests may also have molecular testing for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) by the FDA approved Hybrid Capture 2 test, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea testing via the FDA approved method.

Medical Cytology includes the examination of body fluids (such as pleural, pericardial, peritoneal and cerebrospinal fluids), respiratory and urinary specimens. Samples are received on slides or cyto-spins are made, slides are stained and evaluated by a team of Cytopathologists.

The Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy Service is active in the performance of superficial FNAs for clinic and hospital patients and in the interpretation of these cases, in addition to those performed with image guidance and by other physicians. Our state of the art core laboratory prepares conventional smears, cyto-spins and cell blocks for immunohistochemical, flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostics evaluation .

If you would like to refer a patient to our FNA clinic please call 352-265-0238.
