Cardiac Pathology

The cardiac pathology section provides cardiovascular diagnostic service to UF-Shands Hospital and a consultative service on referred cardiovascular pathology specimens. Areas of expertise include vessel pathology, endomyocardial biopsies, cardiac valves, explanted hearts, cardiovascular grafts and prosthetic devices. With an active cardiac transplant program since 1985 for end stage cardiac conditions in both pediatric and adult populations, we analyze about 850 endomyocardial biopsies each year. While most of these biopsies are evaluated for cellular and antibody mediated rejection, we also examine a significant number of biopsies for non-transplant related pathologies, such as for amyloid and myocarditis. The section networks with cardiologists, surgeons and transplant coordinators to provide timely and expert opinions that promote patient care and improve outcomes.
